Whitfeld Index – Personal names in Tasmanian colonial newspapers 1816-1900

Card index, handwritten on recycled catalogue cards or paper cut to card size, some with pasted newspaper clippings. The Tasmanian Section of the Whitfeld Index was compiled from Tasmanian newspapers of the colonial period. Mary Lavinia Whitfeld was the daughter of Ernest Whitfeld M.D., magistrate and local historian of northern Tasmania. The Whitfeld Index as a whole indexes colonial newspapers of the eastern colonies of Australia. The non-Tasmanian sections of the Index are held in the library of the Society of Australian Genealogists in Sydney. The Tasmanian section was bequeathed by Miss Whitfeld to the Northern Branch of the Royal Society of Tasmania and the Society deposited it with the Launceston Library.
