Conduct Registers of Female Convicts Arriving in the Period of the Probation System 1844-1853

As the control of women convicts was always a troublesome problem for the administration it was not feasible to subject women to the probation system and therefore they continued to be dealt with according to the old system. Subsequent to 1844 women’s conduct was recorded in the new type of registers, and each shipload was entered in a separate volume. The following information is included in this series: date and place of trial, sentence, dates of embarkation and arrival, religion, degree of literacy, crime for which sentenced, gaol and hulk report, whether married, convict’s own statement of her offence, Surgeon’s report on conduct during the voyage, then follows the details of the Description Lists: trade, height, age, complexion, head, hair, visage, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, native place, remarks (marks) and information on services.
