Prisoners were registered in the Central Register of Female Prisoners (VPRS 516) soon after they were convicted and committed to a gaol. After release from gaol, if a woman re-offended, details of the subsequent offences and where committed (name of gaol) were recorded in the register under her original registration number.
Volume one (VPRS 10879/P0, unit 1) of the index was used until there was no space for new entries. The names of some prisoners in volume 1 also appear in volume 2 (unit 2) along with new names. Further research is required to establish the reason why some names from volume 1 were also entered in volume 2.
There is no indication on the index as to the date that it was commenced. It has been assumed that it was begun soon after the Central Register came into use.
