Thomas Chuck’s Photo Mosaic

In the early 1870s, Melbourne photographer Thomas Foster Chuck (1826-1898) collected photographs of early settlers who had arrived in the Port Phillip District by 1842. He compiled these into a photo mosaic, adding a number of photos of prominent Melbourne politicians, clergy, judges, etc. who had arrived at later dates. The finished mosaic, which contains over 700 pictures and measures 6 feet high by 5 feet 9 inches wide, is now held by the State Library of Victoria.
