Index to Names Appearing in Charles James Evans’ Diary, 1853-1855

Mainly at Ballarat, including the events at Eureka.  A digitised copy of the diary is available at the State Library Victoria.  Charles Evans’ diary begins eleven months after his arrival in Victoria with his brother, George, and describes the brothers’ experiences working as carters and timber merchants before setting out for the Ballarat diggings with their mutual friend George Morgan, and John Basson Humffray, who had travelled on the same ship as George Morgan; their subsequent arrival in Ballarat, where they established a number of successful businesses, including an auctioneering house and a printing and stationery business; also a first-hand account of the Eureka Stockade, to which Charles was an impartial but sympathetic observer.
