South Australia’s naturalization laws evolved from a gathering of Prussian Lutheran colonists who volunteered an oath of allegiance soon after their arrival. Afghan cameleers, Scandinavian mariners and Chinese gold-diggers added to the mix. The colony was also settled by a few from Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy and other countries. The Government recognised them as Aliens. Although in time, the government produced a formal process, some colonists never applied for naturalization.
