Lord Raglan Convicts, Enrolled Pensioner Guards, Prison Warders and Other Passengers 1858

This 756-ton ship was built in Cardiff in 1854. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left Plymouth, England on March 5, 1858, bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the twentieth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 88 days and the Lord Raglan arrived in Fremantle on June 1, 1858, with 84 passengers and 268 convicts [Erickson]. Thomas Hybert and John Bowler were the captain and surgeon respectively. Of the 84 passengers, 80 were pensioner guards and their families, the number being made up of 30 pensioner guards, 21 wives, 11 sons and 18 daughters. The other 4 passengers have not been accounted for but were possibly cabin passengers or regular soldiers.
