Belgravia Convicts, Enrolled Pensioner Guards, Prison Warders and Other Passengers 1866

This 889-ton ship was built at Sunderland in 1862. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left Portland, England on April 7, 1866, bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the thirty-fourth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 88 days and the Belgravia arrived in Fremantle on July 4, 1866, with 106 passengers and 275 convicts [Erickson]. John E.W. Jackson was the captain of the vessel. Of the 106 passengers, 96 were pensioner guards and their families, the number being made up of 30 pensioner guards, 23 wives, 21 sons and 22 daughters. The other 10 passengers have not been accounted for but were possibly cabin passengers or regular soldiers.
