The Newtown Assessment Books record property assessments for rating purposes (local property taxation). Information generally recorded is: assessment number, address of property; names of owner, occupier, or lessee; description of the property (eg house); and valuation and rating figures. Details of payments and arrears of rates due are also recorded.
The series commenced in circa 1862 and ended circa 1925, but content is held to 1892.
It is chronological by assessment and rating years. Each volume is arranged in order of wards, then by streets and assessment numbers of individual properties.
