Friendship 16 February 1800

Partial Index. The Friendship that arrived at Port Jackson on 16 February 1800 was a different ship to the Friendship that sailed as part of the First Fleet in 1788. The original Friendship was scuttled on the return voyage to England. She left England carrying 133 prisoners. Of these nineteen died during the voyage to the NSW Penal colony. There were no complaints made regarding harsh treatment and all the landed convicts were in good health so the mortalities are generally attributed to the poor condition the prisoners were in when they were originally embarked on the ship. A lot of the prisoners on the Friendship were Irish political prisoners who had been convicted of the crime of being “Members of the United Irishmen”
