State Library Victoria
Description
Established in 1854 as the Melbourne Public Library, State Library Victoria is Australia’s oldest public library and one of the first free public libraries in the world.
While most people know about their extensive book collections, there’s plenty to surprise in their other historical collections, which date back to 1854. They include more than 350,000 photographs, personal manuscripts & diaries, maps, old magazines & journals, newspapers, comics, and even old advertising and theatre programs. We also have an eclectic array of textiles and personal items.
The Library also offers a wealth of expertise and information for experienced family historians and those just starting out on the journey, including newspapers, letters, diaries and manuscripts, maps, passenger lists and electoral rolls.
