Many of the men who lived in the camps were men who served in the trenches in World War One. Many could not settle following the war and left home to wander through Australian. Many came to Canberra and some died without leaving information about families. The sale of alcohol in the ACT was banned from 1913 until 1928. The Hotels at Queanbeyan did well out of this ban and many men spent time and money on alcohol which at times contributed to the cause of death. One of the most dangerous sections of the road was the Uriarra Road between Canberra and Queanbeyan. Mill Creek is on the Canberra side of Fyshwick and Black Creek is roughly opposite Harman Naval Base closer to Queanbeyan. Today this road is Canberra Avenue.
