Family History — The Process

Research Process

Family History begins with collecting various family documents, personal narratives, and cherished stories, all of which collectively create a foundation for research. This research involves examining and evaluating historical records to uncover evidence about your ancestors, their family ties, and the significant events that profoundly shaped their lives. By delving into these vital records and narratives, we gain a deeper understanding of our heritage and of the experiences that defined our ancestors.

As a general rule, family historians begin their research with the present and then work backward through time, delving into the histories of their ancestors. This backward approach allows them to piece together a more comprehensive family narrative. Understanding the historical, social, and familial context surrounding their ancestors lives is essential for accurately identifying individuals and understanding their relationships. Reliable conclusions are drawn based on the quality of the sources used, these should be original records that offer a firsthand account of events. Furthermore, the information contained within those sources needs to be of high quality, preferably consisting of primary or firsthand information that has not been altered by secondhand reporting. Lastly, family historians must carefully analyze the evidence that can be derived from this information, whether it be directly or indirectly, to construct a well-founded and nuanced understanding of their family lineage.
