Description
The purpose of the Traralgon & District Historical Society is to foster historical interests and knowledge in the community of Traralgon and its surrounding districts. Their main localities of interest are Traralgon, Boola Boola, Callignee, Carrajung, Flynn, Gormandale, Koornalla, Le Roy, Loy Yang, Toongabbie, Tyers, Walhalla and Willung.
The Society’s holdings include:
Photographs: A collection of over 4,000 photographs of Traralgon and districts – including Glengarry, Gormandale, Toongabbie, Tyers, Willung, Callignee, Carrajung, Koornalla and surrounds. These are in a searchable database.
Books: Local histories, family histories, scrapbooks, diaries and general Gippsland histories.
Periodicals: A wide range of Gippsland Historical Society newsletters and bulletins.
Maps: A large collection of Parish plans, Town plans, Topographical maps, Subdivision plans and others.
Manuscript Material: Notes, letters, minute books, account books, ephemera, from towns, schools, families and district organizations.
Vertical Files: An extensive collection of documents, newspaper cuttings, booklets, ephemera, etc., sorted by family names, districts, property names and subjects.
Objects: They hold a small collection of artifacts, mementos and trophies.
The Society has a catalogue of the collection that currently has over 6,500 entries, that is searchable on their public-access computer.
They also have a second database that is names indexed from various publications, school records and the Traralgon Cemetery. That contains over 42,000 entries and is searchable on their public-access computer.
All are welcome to attend the Society’s rooms on ‘open days’ and seek assistance to do their own research.
Alternatively, the Society can perform research on your behalf. Research Fees:- Personal research is $25.00 per hour or part thereof. Corporate research is $50.00 per hour or part thereof.
Photo prints are $5.00 ea. Photocopies and postage may incur extra costs.
Open days: Last Sunday of each month 2 pm till 4 pm except December and Public Holidays. Rooms can also be opened by appointment.
