Stawell Historical Society is run and staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers who over the years have amassed a large knowledge of Stawell and surrounding districts.

The primary purpose of the Stawell Historical Society is to care for and protect the archival materials entrusted to it and to seek to ensure that these materials are preserved and saved for use and appreciation of present and future generations.

The Society provides a research centre for members of the public seeking information about former residents or historical material, since Stawell’s settlement from the 1840s until the current time.

The research department has a very large collection of Local and District History. Marriage and baptismal records of many local churches have been copied, indexed and these are available for family history research. They also have a comprehensive register of burials in Stawell District Cemeteries for use in their research. Many of their District Schools have been indexed for easy reference.

Since 1853, mining has been a significant part of Stawell’s History. The Society have some information on those early pioneers in the goldfields, as well as individual files on many families which have been compiled as a result of research enquiries received over the years. They also have information concerning businesses, hotels and their licencees and stations.

The Society has available a selection of Birth, Death and Marriage records for Victoria on microfiche and CD Rom.

They have many files which contain newspaper articles, certificates and other information and about 25,000 cards in their index.
