Newcastle Family History Society Inc.
Description
The Newcastle Family History Society Inc. exists to provide support and encouragement for those interested in family history. It encourages the exchange of ideas and knowledge in a supportive atmosphere.
The Society was formed in 1983 and operates from the former Mechanics Institute at 68 Elder Street, Lambton. Membership is open to anyone interested in their own family history, Hunter Valley history and family history or history in general – no matter where they live.
Their Library houses a great number of books, journals, maps, microfilm and microfiche records, CD and USB records, indexes, cemetery transcripts and local and family histories. Their computers have access to Find My Past and wifi is freely available throughout their rooms. The Society researches and writes publications of significance to family historians and produces a Journal four times a year.
Both members and non-members are welcome to visit the Society’s Library during opening hours to carry out their family history research. Volunteers are on duty to assist in locating resources or to suggest a possible way forward when the inevitable brick wall brings research to a full stop.
The use of the Library is free for all Society members but non-members pay a fee of $5 on Thursday afternoons or $10 for the full day on Saturdays.
If you are unable to attend their Library to carry out your own research, the Society also offers a Research Service.
The library is open on Thursdays from 1 pm to 3.30 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 3.30 pm.
