Morwell Historical Society

Description

The Morwell Historical Society was formed in 1962 with an ongoing goal to promote, preserve and record securely the history of Morwell and district which includes the areas of Churchill, Driffield, Hazelwood Estate, Hazelwood South, Hazelwood North, Darlimurla, Delburn, Gunyah Gunyah, Jeeralang Junction, Jumbuk, Morwell West, Morwell Bridge, Yinnar, Boolarra, Derham’s Hill, Hernes Oak and White City, and to make information in their archives readily available to the general public.

The Society’s archives contain records, some school rolls and class photos of local schools:

  • Commercial Road Primary School
  • Collins Street Primary School
  • Maryvale High School
  • Morwell High School
  • Morwell Technical School
  • Kurnai College
  • Tobruk Street Primary School
  • Morwell Park Primary School
  • Crinigan Road Primary School

They also have some records of small country schools that are now closed.

Morwell Historical Society is an approved ‘Place of Deposit’ (POD), for Public Records, and among their vast collection, they have local government reference material in the form of Rates Books, early correspondence, road details etc.

They also have photographs, cemetery records, street information and some house photos. Community organisations, sporting and recreation clubs, manuscripts, parish maps, general maps, ephemera, and family histories are just a few of the extensive records they hold.

Their Book Library consists of a wide range of subjects including local, Gippsland and other area histories, directories, war histories and personal family publications.

The Research Room and library are opened on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays and last Sunday in the month, from 11.00 am to 2.00 pm – except December and January.
