Melbourne Cricket Club Archives
Description
Melbourne Cricket Club Archives is a treasure chest of historical, biographical and general information holding fascinating decades of socio-cultural details about the life and times of Melbourne.
A storehouse of memories is preserved and made accessible by MCC Archives. These primary source documents illustrate the history of the MCC, its management of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and other sporting facilities, and its contribution towards the development of the sport.
MCC Archives is managed by a full-time professional archivist who is assisted by a research officer with extensive knowledge of the club and sporting history. Volunteers provide support and expertise in various relevant areas.
MCC Archives is a rich resource at the service of MCC members, staff, volunteers and researchers. It occupies approximately 100 linear metres of shelf space.
Types of records held include financial, administrative and cultural/socio/historical records including ledgers, minute books, letter books, membership books, receipt books, stile books, scorebooks, scrapbooks, maps and plans, sketches, personal and business correspondence.
MCC Archives has qualified staff who are available to provide general information about the collections and relevant advice concerning any secondary source material. They welcome the opportunity to assist with specific reference enquiries.
In addition, simple research questions that can easily be answered will be treated as reference enquiries. This reference service is free of charge.
Where requests for complex research activities require extensive access to MCC Archives, this shall be granted at the discretion of the MCC CEO.
The archives are not a “self-service” environment, and if such a request is granted the researcher shall only be permitted access to the parts of the collection relating to their request.
Researchers who wish to undertake their own research projects using the archives are required to register annually before they are able to access collection material.
This procedure entails completing a Registered Archives Users Application Form (Schedule 6) and submitting an annual subscription fee where required (as set out in Schedule 2). This fee assists us in operating and maintaining their high-quality services.

The archives will conduct a limited amount of research on behalf of researchers and reasonable fees will be charged for this service (as set out in Schedule 2).
Charges apply whether or not an actual record is found. This specialist research assistance is typically available for the benefit of Registered Archives Users who are unable to attend MCC Archives in person, or they request information from restricted records.
Staff will attend to requests by appointment only during MCC Library opening hours (10.00 am-4.00 pm, Monday to Friday), subject to MCG match day requirements.
Appointments must be organised in advance with the archivist or authorised staff by mail, telephone or email.
