Description
At a public meeting held in the Bayswater Public Hall on the 14th of May 1965, it was decided to form a Shire of Knox Historical Society. The inaugural meeting of the historical society was held on the 21st of June 1965.
The City of Knox includes Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Knoxfield, Knox Gardens, Lysterfield, Rowville, Scoresby, Studfield, The Basin, Upper Ferntree Gully, Wantirna, and Wantirna South.
The facilities of the Knox Historical Society Inc. Resource Centre are available for anyone interested in the history of Knox. School and university students, family history researchers, residents seeking information about their house, street or local buildings, members of sporting groups, clubs and societies, schools, churches or businesses researching the history of their organisation, council employees and staff preparing articles for local newspapers or community newsletters are some of the many people who use the Resource Centre.
A five-dollar charge is made for the use of the Resource Centre. Photocopying is available for a small fee.
The Resource Centre contains an extensive collection of books, vertical file material, photographs, maps, audiotapes and videotapes, microfiche and microfilm, and local newspapers and community newsletters providing information about the history of Knox and the former Shire of Ferntree Gully.
Items in the collection include the Dobson Diaries (describing farming 100 years ago), government reports, correspondence, minutes of local community groups and organisations, council minutes and copies of associated papers collected by Violet Lambert between 1929 and 1959, land brochures, records of local businesses, pamphlets, newspaper articles, ephemera and an extensive, detailed collection of material relating to the development of Knox as well as genealogical information of Knox pioneers researched from Birth, Death and Marriage Records, and material held at the Public Records Office, the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, The Latrobe Library and the Land Titles Office.
The Knox Pioneer Index is a computer database containing information about pioneer families in the Shire of Ferntree Gully. Searches for family history information on the Knox Pioneer Index will be made for a small fee. Additional information about Ferntree Gully Shire pioneer families is always welcome.
