Ipswich Genealogical Society

Description

The Ipswich Genealogical Society Inc. was the first genealogical society in Queensland when it first formed in 1977. Their role is to assist and support people researching their family history.

The Society’s administrative responsibilities and ever-expanding resource base are managed by a dedicated and friendly group of volunteers and voluntary committee members.

The Society has an extensive range of resources and library covering many countries and catering to all needs and specializing in Ipswich and the surrounding areas.

The Society publishes a tri-annual magazine, the “Bremer Echoes”, and distributes it free of charge to members, supporters and other societies nationally and internationally.

Ipswich Genealogical Society Inc’s Resource Centre is located at ‘Brigg House’ at the Cooneana Heritage Centre.

An extensive microfilm collection is available for research within the Research Rooms. These include:

  • Indices to Births, Deaths and Marriages for all Australian States
  • Cemetery records
  • Ipswich North Australian 1858 to 1866
  • Fassifern Guardian 1901 to 1930
  • Microform Gifted by Colonial Forces Study Group Queensland

The Society has an increasing number of records on the computers including:

  • Indices to Births, Deaths and Marriages
  • Burial Registers for the Ipswich & surrounding district Cemeteries
  • Photographs of Gravestones from many Cemeteries.
  • Mine Workers Muster
  • Railway Workers Muster

The Society has an extensive lending library from which members may borrow two (2) books at a time for a period of 2 weeks.

The Society also has a reference library; these books are available only for perusal within the Research Rooms.

This section contains:

  • School, Church and Family histories; various census records; Cemetery records
  • Research directories; Cemetery headstones and inscriptions; Shipping and Immigration records
  • Convict records; Journals and Magazines from other Societies

Open Monday & Thursday 9.30 am – 2.30 pm; Saturday 9 am – 12 pm. Closed Sundays and Public Holidays.
