Gerringong & District Historical Society (GDHS)
Description
The Gerringong & District Historical Society is a small but active society dedicated to preserving the history of the Gerringong district.
The boundaries of the area covered range from Mount Pleasant and Omega in the north, to Rose Valley, Willow Vale and Foxground in the west, and to Broughton Village, Toolijooa, Harley Hill, Gerroa and Seven Mile Beach in the south. In the centre of the area lies the town of Gerringong itself, and the nearby area of Werri Beach.
The Gerringong area was first settled in the late 1820s, initially by cedar cutters. As the land was cleared, dairy farming became the predominant industry and remains so to this day. The town of Gerringong was officially proclaimed on January 17th, 1854.
The GDHS operates a museum, situated in Blackwood Street, Gerringong. The opening hours of the museum are Saturday and Sunday 1-4 pm, with additional openings on Tuesdays and Thursdays (same hours) during NSW school holidays.
Reference items are also available for consultation, including the Gerringong Pioneer Family Index and Gerringong Landholders Returns 1885. Further research items are being progressively added as they are compiled.
A computerised database of Pioneer Family descendants is available at the Museum, and also Birth, Death and Marriage records relating to the Gerringong area, and to areas such as the Richmond River which have a strong connection to Gerringong Pioneer Families.
Although GDHS is not a Family History Centre they do have a large amount of information on Gerringong’s early pioneers and we are more than happy to assist in any enquiries. Enquiries should be made via their Contact Page and addressed to ‘The Research Officer’. Every effort will be made to assist, but please realise that in some cases a considerable amount of research time may be required by volunteers.
