Description
Named after Australia’s second Prime Minister (Alfred Deakin), Deakin University was formally established in 1974 under the Deakin University Act 1974 (Vic). Deakin was the fourth university in Victoria and the first to have a regional campus. It was one of the first universities in the country to specialise in distance education.
The Archives primary role is the appraisal, selection, custody and preservation of the official records of the University, including the records of Council and other committees of the University, and records of the academic and administrative divisions of the University for the purposes of present and future scholarly research. Includes records of antecedent institutions including the former:
- Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education
- The Geelong Teachers College
- Toorak Teachers College
- Burwood Teachers College
- Rusden Teachers College
- Prahran College of Advanced Education
- Victoria College
Personal papers of significant university administrators and academics are also collected and maintained.

- Central Registry and administrative files
- Board and Committee records
- Photographic and audiovisual collections
- Student and staff files
- Course books and unit guides
- Records of the Football Federation of Victoria
- Personal papers of Max Charlesworth
The Archives are open by appointment only. Closed bank holidays and between Christmas and New Year.
