Brighton Historical Society
Description
Since their founding in 1963, Brighton Historical Society (BHS) has been working to collect and preserve items and information connected to the history and heritage of Brighton, Victoria.
Located in the Bayside Arts and Cultural Centre (Old Town Hall), the BHS is home to an extensive and diverse collection, including photos, documents, maps, art, artifacts and a large costume collection of State significance.
The BHS is a member of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, the Bayside History Network, the South Metro History Group and Museums Australia and has been appointed by the Public Record Office of Victoria as a Place of Deposit.
The Society regularly assists people with research on a wide range of subjects, including family histories, histories of buildings and businesses, heritage and planning issues, architecture, artistic projects and community interests. You are most welcome to come and explore their diverse collection on Thursday afternoons between 12 noon and 5 pm (other times may be arranged on request).
There is a fee of $10 for people doing their own research in their rooms. BHS members may research for free.
They are also able to compile house histories and undertake other research on request for a fee of $20 per hour. The cost of the work will depend on the complexity and the amount of research needed to meet your request.
