Armidale Family History Group

Description

The first meeting of the Armidale Family History Group was held in 1985 when a small group of people interested in the history of their families, joined together to assist each other in researching their family histories.

Armidale is located midway between Sydney and Brisbane on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The first record of the town’s existence dates to September 1839 when a Land Commissioner, George Macdonald, made a report to the Government in Sydney. Some small communities which surrounded Armidale include Arding, Baker’s Creek, Ben Venue, Black Mountain, Boorolong, Castle Doyle, Commissioner’s Waters, Dangarsleigh, Dumaresq, Duval, Ebor, Enmore, Gostwyck, Guy Fawkes, Hillgrove, Invergowrie, Jeogla, Kelly’s Plains, Kentucky, Kilcoy, Lyndhurst, Marple, Metz, Mihi, Puddledock, Rockvale, Saumarez, Thalgarrah, Tilbuster, Wollomombi and Wongwibinda. Many of these names are prominent in the Group’s research and are still well-known today.

The Armidale Family History Group is open for research at their Kentucky Street Research Centre located between Dangar and Faulkner Streets Armidale, from February until mid-December and excepting for public holidays: Every Monday 2 pm to 5 pm and every Wednesday 10 am to 4 pm.

Occasional Workshops on Saturdays are held between 10 am to 12 noon open free to all group members and visitors. Non-members are charged $10 to attend a workshop.

The Armidale Family History Group endeavour to open the Library for visitors from outside the New England region provided that they are given at least seven days notice by letter or email (a fee of $20 is required to cover the cost of opening the Centre).

Alternatively, the Armidale Family History Group Inc. offers a Research Service to people who are unable to visit Armidale. The initial cost is $35.00 Australian per enquiry payable in advance by cheque or money order; this includes return postage. For this fee, they will research one surname in the resources they hold in their Library. See General Research Enquiries for more information.
